SUBSTITUTE Playworker
play:groundNYC is hiring substitute playworkers for Summer & Fall 2026. A substitute playworker is someone we call on as-needed to fill in throughout the season. We are especially seeking candidates who have consistent weekend availability.
Substitutes receive playwork training and they are mentored by our core team of playworkers during shifts. These roles are ideal for people who are interested in working with young people at our junkyard playground, learning more about self-directed play, and seeking flexibility in their schedule.
It’s great for those who are interested in being considered for a playworker position in 2027, and would like to get to know the team and the environment first.
Requirements include:
Completing an online training session on August 11, 2026 from 1pm - 4pm
Completing an in-person training session at The Yard on August 15, 2026 from 9am - 5pm
Agreeing to work outdoors in all weather (except hazardous conditions)
Agreeing to join our list of substitutes from now until the end of November 2026
Stipend of $125 is included for full participation in the training. Pay is $25.44/hour. Shifts are not guaranteed; they are on an as-needed basis.
